This paper studies the impact of occupational recognition for refugees. While occupational recognition has been shown to improve immigrants’ labor market outcomes more broadly, evidence for refugees, who face even stronger labor market barriers, is scarce. Using linked survey and administrative register data and applying recent difference-in-differences methods, we estimate the impact of recognition on employment and related outcomes for refugees who entered Germany since 2013. Occupational recognition increases employment, particularly full-time employment. We find some evidence for a positive association of occupational recognition with life satisfaction and remittance payments. Earnings effects are larger for female than male refugees, while employment gains are larger for men. The results are robust across datasets and specifications.
