You are invited to join the weekly Nuremberg Research Seminar in Economics on 21 April 2021 at 13:15. The seminar will be held via Zoom. Erwin Winkler (FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg) will be talking about “High-Pressure, High-Paying Jobs ”.

Please find below the abstract:

Drawing on detailed worker-level survey data for Germany, we show that work-related pressure, for example working under tight deadlines, has increased substantially during the last decades. We find a sizable wage premium associated with work pressure even within narrowly defined occupations. In line with theories of compensating differentials, workers in high-pressure, high-paying jobs report several disamenities including worse health outcomes. High-pressure jobs are overrepresented in firms that are expanding, reorganizing, and have recently outsourced workers or adopted new production technologies. In placebo regressions, we show that civil servants are not compensated for high work pressure.
