More information can be found here:

This paper studies the effects of reducing mandatory job applications in unemployment insurance. We exploit a market-level policy change in Switzerland, where a subset of Public Employment Services reduced the number of required applications by 25% and abolished mandatory vacancy referrals. Using detailed administrative data and  a difference-in-differences design, we find that the policy change increased the average  duration of unemployment spells by about 8%, while increasing average re-employment earnings by about 3%. Moreover, the reform caused a reduction in firms’ vacancy posting at the Public Employment Service.
