You are invited to join the weekly Nuremberg Research Seminar in Economics on 19 November 2025, from 13.15 to 14.45 pm. The seminar will be held in room LG 4.154. Raoul van Maarseveen (University of Cologne) will be talking about “Parental separations: developments, causes, and consequences”.

More information can be found here:

Parental separation is a common event in childhood, yet its evolution over time and its consequences for children remain poorly understood. We use novel data on parental co-location in Sweden to study parental separation events for cohorts born from the 1950s until the 2000s. While high-SES families are almost as stable today as in the 1960s, the stability of low-SES families has declined markedly. Observing all types of separation events is critical, as restricting attention to divorce underestimates both changes over time and the SES gradient by more than 50%. The results regarding the effects of parental separation on educational outcomes are mixed. We find relatively small effects on national test scores, but substantial effects on teacher-assigned grades and subsequent enrollment in the academic high school track.
